SIBiol and Science Centre Singapore co-organised the 6th Singapore Junior Biology Olympiad (SJBO) for students from Secondary 2 to 4 (or their international equivalent) and welcomed all Singapore-based schools to take part on Wednesday 21st July 2021. A total of 1723 students from 74 schools participated in the online Theory Round. This year’s SJBO allowed students to participate in the online Theory Round as either a home-based, open-book “Challenge” or as an invigilated “Competition” format.

For the SJBO Theory Round Competition, 83 students received gold medals, 148 received silver medals, 200 received bronze medals, 141 received honourable mention and 999 received certificate of participation. For the SJBO Theory Round Challenge, a total of 153 students received certificate of participation.

Following the Theory Round (Competition), the top seven schools were selected to participate in the practical round: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Hwa Chong Institution, Nanyang Girl’s High School, NUS High School of Mathematics and Science, Raffles Girls’ School, Raffles Institution and Victoria School. Schools selected were allowed to train and select 5 students (including 1 reserve) to participate in the practical round. Due to the Phase 3 Heightened Alert measures, the practical round, that was supposed to be conducted at the St. John’s National Marine Laboratory (SJINML), was translated to an online competition held on 18 August 2021. Students from each school participated in teams of four for this online practical competition. A range of tasks, simulating how data collection and analyses in science were assigned to the students, which included having to interpret graphs and identifying dissected parts of a fish, using a taxonomic key to identify a sea anemone species and the blasting of genetic sequences. The results of the 6th SJBO 2021 are as follows:

Overall Champion:  Victoria School
1st Runner-up: NUS High School of Math and Science
2nd Runner-up:  Anglo Chinese School (Independent)
Honourable Mention: Raffles Girls’ School
